How to Install GTA 6 Maps
The complete 2026 guide to installing all free custom maps for GTA 6 - roleplay MLOs, race tracks, open-world expansions, heist locations and stunt zones. Works for every map on GTA6Maps.com.
Before you start
Always back up your GTA 6 install folder prior to installing a map. Never load custom maps while connected to GTA Online - doing so will result in an automatic account ban. Play Story Mode or start a private offline session instead.
6-step install flow
All GTA 6 maps from GTA6Maps.com use the same install process. It takes about 5 minutes after you've installed the prerequisites once.
Back up your game files
Always make a backup of your GTA 6 install folder before applying any map install. If anything gets messed up, you can restore in seconds rather than having to redownload 150GB.
Install prerequisites
Most GTA 6 maps require a file browser (edits RPF archives) and a memory extender (if you plan on installing huge overhauls). Both are free.
Download the map
All downloads on GTA6Maps.com are single .zip, .rar or .7z archives containing a readme, version tag and install instructions from the map maker.
Extract the archive
Use 7-Zip, WinRAR or the native Windows extractor. Extract to a temporary folder, never directly into your game folder.
Install the files
Most map mods will place .ymap and .ybn files into your custom maps folder. Some MLOs may require the file browser to perform RPF swaps. Read the creator's readme.
Launch offline
Boot up GTA 6 in Story Mode or a private session. Never load custom maps while in GTA Online - you will get banned automatically.
Install methods by map type
Every type of GTA 6 map has a slightly different installation path. Select yours below.
Roleplay MLOs
Police stations, hospitals, mansions, courthouses. Installation is done through a file browser tool, by replacing files within your game's custom interior RPFs.
Most MLOs will come with a __resource.lua or install readme for the RP framework hooks.
Circuits & drag strips
Install your .ymap checkpoint data and track geometry into your custom maps directory. Most tracks auto-load through a menu mod; some require a track-script install as well.
Expansions & islands
Full-region mods require both .ymap files and streaming configs. Many come with their own DLC-pack installer. Always remember to use a memory extender with open-world mods.
Ramps & playgrounds
Stunt maps are packaged as single .ymap files that contain collision and physics data. Place them into your custom maps directory - no extra setup required.
Scripted setups
Heist and mission packs combine map geometry with script triggers. A script hook framework is required for guard AI and alarms.
Combat arenas
Arena maps are installed as separate .ymap files that include spawn-point information. Most are compatible with vanilla PvP; some require special PvP scripting mods.
Common install problems and fixes
95% of problems installing maps can be attributed to one of these five reasons. Quick fixes follow.
Game crashes on load
Delete the last map you added, validate game files, then reinstall cleanly. When big map mods crash, it's usually because there's no memory extender installed.
Missing textures (pink)
Pink or white textures indicate that your texture files either got put into the incorrect RPF file or became corrupted when extracting. Try extracting them again into a new folder.
Map doesn't load
Verify that your .ymap and .ybn files are in the correct custom maps subfolder. Paths are often explicitly stated in creators' readmes - don't guess.
Out-of-memory errors
Add a memory extender. Massive open-world mods require 2-4GB of streaming buffer memory, which the base game does not set aside by default.
Broke after game patch
Rockstar patches break scripting hooks and file paths. Visit the creator's update page for a patch-compatible version.
Two maps conflicting
When two mods occupy the same region of the world, one silently takes over. Eliminate one mod at a time until you find the culprit, then decide which you like better.

Edits RPF archives, replaces textures, views game files. Needed for any map mod that alters existing game folders.
Memory extender
Extends the stream buffer for heavy map loads. Needed for any open-world expansion or when stacking multiple MLOs. Install it once, leave it alone.

Do I need admin rights to install maps?
Many installations require administrator rights to write to the Program Files folder. If you encounter permission errors, try right-clicking your installer and selecting 'Run as administrator'.
How long does a map install take?
5 minutes or less for single MLO creations. 15-30 minutes for full-blown open-world expansions, due to their file size (usually 1-5GB).
What if my game crashes after install?
Delete your newest map, verify game files in your launcher and do a clean reinstall. 90% of crashes are caused by mod conflicts, missing dependencies or outdated tools.
Can I install multiple maps at once?
Sure, but install them one at a time, testing in between. If two maps occupy the same coordinates, they will silently conflict.
Why are paid maps on a different site?

Do I need a memory extender?
If you're installing big map overhauls (500MB+), then yes. Heavy texture stacks, large MLOs and multi-area mods will crash if you don't use one. You can find plenty of free ones.
